Zhonghua Xu

Dr. Zhonghua Xu is currently positioned as a research scientist at SPACE@VT, the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research, ECE Department, Virginia Tech. His major research interests include ground magnetic field instrument development, ground magnetic field observation, geomagnetic field variations study, geomagnetic data analysis, and other related researches. Dr. Xu has a doctor degree in space physics from Utah State University and was a contractor for the U.S. Geological Survey, processing geomagnetic data for geomagnetic hazards study in the Geomag group. Since he started his current position in Virginia Tech, he has heavily involved in instrument development and has lead the field team four times to deploy autonomous space weather monitoring stations in Antarctica. In the GIC Hazards SEES project, he was involved in the development of geomagnetic and geo-electric field instrumentation and deployed the autonomous sets to the field. Also, he developed the software to process the observed magnetic field data for hazards analysis. Besides his research contribution, he also served as the GEM Summer/Mini Workshop coordinator for the space physics community, organizing the annual workshop which is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Atmospheric Sciences initiative to coordinate and focus research on the near-earth portion of geospace from the lower ionosphere to where the earth system interacts with the solar wind.
